Westerlo football academy held a Nigeria Professional Football League
selected side to a 3-3 draw in a test game played at Isheri , Lagos on
Wednesday.
The highly entertaining encounter saw the academy run by former
Nigeria goalkeeper Joseph Dosu open the flood gates of goals through
Alimi Jamiu before a fine effort from Adewunmi Jelili doubled their
advantage thanks to a defensive mishap from the Nigeria league stars.
Few minutes into the second half, 3SC’s Gbolahan Salami won a penalty
for his side that was converted by Francis Edem. On resumption of the
second half, Chibuike Meschack leveled scores for the NPFL selected
outfit. Westerlo then shot to the lead few minutes later through Sani
Riliwan before Jimoh Oseni restored parity for the premier league
players.
Speaking to Goal after the match, Dosu expressed delight with the turn out of football fans and promised to organize more matches in future.
“This is a platform we put to ensure top players from the Nigeria
Premier League get to play against the academy. It’s a nice thing to do
and it gives the people of Isheri opportunity to watch their local
heroes play and also interact with them,” said Dosu.
“This is
the third edition and I can assure you that when the foreign-based
professionals come home on holiday, we will bring them around to play
against the Westerlo Academy,” he concluded.
Players like Olufemi Oladapo, Ayo Saka, Yusuf Babatunde, John Dosu, and Yemi Olanrewaju were some of the NPFL stars on parade
